How to Become an Exporter - An Introduction to US Exporting

by John Goodrich

You return to work and log into your email. There, as promised, you find that huge order from those nice people you met at the trade show in Las Vegas. As you recall, they weren’t proficient in English but that doesn’t really matter because the size of the order is going to boost company sales substantially. Orders are good! It won’t be bad for your career either. Full of enthusiasm you bring the order to the attention of your executive team and are heartily congratulated.

Glowing with success you return to your desk. Only then do you begin to look at the details of the order and realize that even though those nice people from the trade show had a US business address the order was issued by a foreign corporation with a foreign delivery address. As you read further you see a reference to something called DDP and something about payment being made via a confirmed letter of credit payable at 120 days sight.

You recall seeing a news story about increased government scrutiny of export shipments and more questions flow:
  • I wonder if this increased scrutiny will interfere with this order.
  • Who are these regulators anyway?
  • What could they be looking for in my shipment?
  • We have a nice product. We’re not at risk of regulatory intervention, are we?
As the questions continue in your mind you begin to speculate if, indeed, this order is really such a blessing and whether or not it is worth the work it will take to properly fulfill it. You know other companies export regularly. How do they do it and how did they get started?

This publication introduces you to the details and complexities of exporting from the United States and provides a roadmap for developing your company’s export program.
