When negotiating an international sales contract, both parties need to pay as much attention to the shipping terms as to the sales price. When does the responsibility for transporting the goods switch from the seller to the buyer? Which party is responsible for insuring the goods and at what point does that liability shift?
To help clarify the answers to these questions and more, the International Chamber of Commerce has created a set of 13 trade terms - called Incoterms - that defines the exact responsibilities and liabilities of both the buyer and seller while the merchandise is in transit.
The
IBT Guide to Incoterms 2000 book fully and clearly defines each of the new Incoterms that became effective January 1, 2000, and includes a number of case studies that demonstrate the use of the different terms in real-life situations. This important book should be on the desk of every international trade professional.
