The number of items imported into the United States is growing every year. This huge number of imports makes it difficult—if not impossible—for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to check to see if every shipment complies with import regulations. That’s why Congress transferred legal responsibility—and liability—from Customs to importers.
As an importer, it is your company’s responsibility to properly classify all imported goods, declare their correct value, pay the appropriate duties, and comply with all other import requirements. To ensure compliance, CBP conducts audits of importers to ensure that you’ve been meeting these responsibilities and that you have procedures in place to continue compliance in the future.
If your company successfully completes the CPB audit, you’ll likely be exposed to minimal inspections in the future. If you fail the audit, however, you may face financial penalties and restrictions barring you from future imports, you’ll be forced to develop and implement an import compliance plan, and you’ll probably face frequent CBP audits in the future.
Don’t wait until you get a call from CBP before you evaluate your import procedures. International Business Training’s experienced consultants will analyze your current import procedures, grade your company on how well it complies with current import regulations, and present you and your colleagues with a plan for addressing any shortcomings.
