Import Assistance for Companies of All Sizes

Customs StampIt doesn't matter if you are a large corporation or a small company, an experienced importer or new to the process. U.S. Customs has placed responsibility for import compliance squarely on your shoulders. That means you better understand what you are doing or you could face loss of your goods and significant fines and other penalties for failure to comply.

That’s why we’ve put together a collection of resources from reference books to seminars to personalized compliance audits that are specifically designed to help you and your company meet your import responsibilities.  Just click on the title of the book, seminar, audit or compliance tool that interests you for a more complete description of that product.

Reference Books & eBooks

Audits and Compliance: Customs Modernization Act - An overview of the U.S. Customs Modernization Act, providing information on the new audit procedures for imports into the U.S.

Drawback Made Easy - As an exporter, you may be exporting goods that you first imported into the United States. If you are, you may be eligible to receive a refund of the U.S. Customs duties you had to pay upon import. This book provides an overview of the process, who's eligible, and how a drawback is filed.

Doing Your Duty - Product Classification According to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States - If your company is going to succeed in international trade, one of the most basic—and important—requirements is identifying the correct classification for your products. This book will teach you how to develop those harmonized code classification skills.

Import Procedures and Documentation - This reference guide discusses the parties to an import transaction, requesting a quotation, negotiating trade terms, selecting a method of payment and more.

So You Want to Be an Importer: An Introduction to Managing the U.S. Import Supply Chain - This book is intended to provide an overview of the myriad of issues that await you in the importing process. It is also intended to highlight some of the common challenges U.S. companies face when they transition from a predominantly U.S.-focused sourcing organization to a globally focused one.

Textiles & Wearing Apparel: Documentation & Procedures - This book provides import documentation and procedures for textile goods imported into the United States.

Transportation, Logistics and the Law - In the current state of the global economy, corporate personnel need a quick reference guide to the fundamental regulations and laws governing their business. Transportation, Logistics and the Law was designed to fill that need… and more!

Understanding the International Supply Chain: Air & Ocean Transportation - The book features sections on transportation costs, packing, working with freight forwarders, Incoterms 2000, ocean bills of lading, common carrier obligations to shippers, ocean transportation, air waybills of lading, air freight transportation, insurance and documentation.

U.S. Customs Broker Examination Preparation Manual - The U.S. Customs Broker Examination Preparation Manual describes many of the key elements of the Customs regulations that a licensed customs broker must be familiar with in order to conduct business successfully on the behalf of an importer.  Regardless of your level of knowledge pertaining to Customs regulations, the U.S. Customs Broker Examination Preparation Manual will present the subject matter in an easy-to-understand format that both a novice or seasoned veteran will find beneficial.

Seminars

Air & Ocean Transportation: Logistics Management for the International Supply Chain - This one-day seminar is the perfect overview of the transportation process—whether you're shipping by ocean or air.

Audit Compliance Focused Assessment - Everyone wants to be an importer. Few people know how to do it properly. Since the passage of the Customs Modernization Act has transferred responsibility—and legal liability—for determining the value, classification and entry requirements from Customs to the importer, this one-day seminar helps you make sure you know what you're doing.

Customs Broker Exam Preparation Correspondence Course - This 10-week correspondence course is designed to assist you in preparing and passing the U.S. Customs and Border Protection licensing examination. It is also highly recommended for importers who want to meet the "Reasonable Care" requirements under the Customs Modernization Act.

Import Documentation & Procedures - This one-day seminar reviews the responsibilities of importers and teaches you how to protect your company from unnecessary delays in getting your goods through Customs and avoid significant penalties from misclassifying or incorrectly valuing your goods.

Letters of Credit and Alternative International Payment Methods - This one-day seminar teaches you how to make a sale that guarantees the seller gets paid and the buyer gets the help he or she needs to finance the deal.

Tariff Classification: Using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule - This one-day session explains the process and gives you the tools to classify your own company's products. This seminar is especially important in 2007 after more than 1,600 HTS codes changed.

Personalized Export Compliance Audits

Import Compliance Checkup - Want an overview of how your import procedures are working?  Our Import Compliance Checkup will survey your import department, review the results, and prepare a scorecard of your program.

Import Compliance Audit - Want a more in-depth review of your import program that examines your company’s procedures and performance using the same type of measures as U.S. Customs?  With our Import Compliance Audit one of our trained and experienced auditors will spend four days at your company diving into the details of your import compliance program and examining a sample of your completed imports.

Compliance Tools

Import Controls - Before you can legally import any goods into the United States you need to be aware of various types of import controls for your products including import licenses and permits, various types of certificates, absolute and tariff rate quotas, and anti-dumping and countervailing duties. Our Import Controls Tool helps you determine whether or not any of these import controls exist. It also provides information concerning the supporting documents you will need to receive an import license or other control documents as well as contact information for the government authorities issuing the license. And because this information is stored online on our secure web server, you can be sure that you are accessing the most current information available.

Landed Cost Calculator - It's easier now than ever to locate products you need from around the world. But just because you've found a lower price for a product doesn't mean it's less expensive once you've paid to import it into your own country. In addition to the price of a product, you must factor in transportation costs, insurance charges, and all the duties, VAT and excise taxes, and other fees that Customs may asses on the goods. Our Landed Cost Calculator helps you determine an accurate estimate of the landed cost of your products by calculating the various import duties, VAT and excise taxes, and other government fees that will be added to your goods before they arrive at their destination.
