Export Controls:
Do Your Products Require an Export License?

A relatively small number of products exported from the United States require an export license from either the U.S. Department of Commerce or another U.S. agency like the State Department. Do your products require an export license? It depends on their technical characteristics, the destination, the end-users and the end uses.

Export Controls - How It Works
Export Controls - Step 1 (Click to Enlarge)	Just enter the date, country of export, country of manufacture and country of import.
Export Controls - Step 2	Now enter the Schedule B or Harmonized Schedule number, the Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) code, and whether your product is being exported for military or non-military use.
Export Controls - Step 3	The results page will display a list of all potentially applicable export controls for your product. A red “X” indicates that applies for your product in all cases, a yellow question mark means that a particular export control might apply, and a green check mark indicates that a particular export control does not apply to your product. If an export control definitely does or may apply to your product, click on the red arrow to display the details of the export controls for your product. You must have a basic understanding of the product classification and export control process to understand the export controls results page. If you do not have that experience, we strongly suggest that you visit the “Introduction to Commerce Department Export Controls” website and get some additional training from the Bureau of Industry and Security or check out our list of export books, seminars and consulting services.
